You just\u00a0had city water installed, and now\u00a0your hot water tank is leaking out of the relief valve!\u00a0 The following information will provide steps to help you solve the problem.<\/p>\n

The first rule to remember is that as water is heated, it will expand.\u00a0 Before getting city water you likely had a pump and cold water expansion tank in your house. \u00a0As\u00a0the water heater did its job,\u00a0the expanded water would push back the line into\u00a0the expansion tank.<\/p>\n

It is common after installing city water\u00a0to have no expansion tank and a check valve installed in the new waterline.\u00a0 When\u00a0the hot water tank heats water, the expanded water has nowhere to go, thus building excess pressure and blowing it out of your water heater relief valve.<\/p>\n

Wilkins Expansion tank – item 41-300<\/p><\/div>\n

The solution is to install a small expansion tank on the cold water line above your water heater.<\/p>\n

We carry an expansion tank for hot water. It is our item # 41-300<\/a>\u00a0 A tee fitting is required\u00a0for\u00a0the cold water line to go to a \u00be<\/strong> \u201c female pipe thread to accept the tank threads. \u00a0You will need enough room for the tank to hang.\u00a0 It is advisable to have\u00a0some support for\u00a0the water line as well,\u00a0\u00a0to avoid putting\u00a0undo strain on it, causing it to break and create another problem.<\/p>\n

You may also want to replace the relief valve, our item 41-274<\/a>, on your water heater as it may still drip after\u00a0being opened by high pressure\u00a0a few times.<\/p>\n
